Symbol UK are a dedicated and specialist “not for profit” organisation committed to developing communication, social and independence skills in children and young people with disabilities and additional needs.

In addition to supporting the families of children and young people who have speech, language & communication needs, we have specialist speech and language therapists who can assess and advise regarding eating, drinking & swallowing difficulties. 

Working with individual families, parent groups, schools, statutory and other agencies, we offer:

  • Initial assessment including discussion with parents/carers and liaison with other professionals supporting the family.
  • A documented plan outlining specific targets and the strategies or support which will enable them to be met.
  • Targeted support – specifically aimed at what your child needs
  • Groups – to offer therapy sessions

Services are offered within early years, mainstream, special school & FE settings. Where appropriate we work from local premises to provide groups or consultations and on occasions we may make home visits

Services operates generally Monday to Friday 9-5pm but occasionally at weekends

Is your service accessible?
As speech & language therapists we make our services fully accessible from the point of view of communication. Venues are chosen to be physically accessible as appropriate.
All our staff are HCPC registered and receive ongoing specialist training to support working with children with SEN and Disabilties.
What are the eligibility criteria for your service?
There are no age restrictions and we cater for all types of special needs. We will discuss all referrals with a parent/carer and advise them if we do not feel we can meet their child’s needs.
How are referrals/applications made to your service?
We accept referrals directly from parent/carers or with their permission from other professionals.
A referral form will be sent following a discussion to determine whether we are likely to be able to meet the child/young person’s needs.
Our services can be commissioned by early years settings, schools and local authorities. Parents are able to purchase a service from us
What is your service standard for responding to referrals/accessing services?
We will respond to an enquiry about a referral within 1 week.
Waiting time to access a service is dependent on the type of service required but is generally within a month. We do not operate waiting lists.

Yes
Details of charges, whether any help is available with costs
This depends on who is commissioning the service.
Sometimes services are charged for if not locally commissioned or funded through a personal budget. Cost is dependent on the service but a guide figure is £75 per hour
Inspection outcomes/quality awards
Our services are not subject to inspection other than through settings in which we work. All qualified staff are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Our sister organisation Symbol Family Support Services is rated as Outstanding by Ofsted.
Feedback and complaints procedure
We have a Complaints policy which is made available to parents and young people and outlines who to contact.
How will I know my child/ young person will be safe using this service?
Symbol works to a range of policies to ensure that we meet children’s needs safely. These include Safer Recruitment – all staff have Enhanced DBS checks; Staff induction including Safeguarding Training; Safeguarding Policy and training with annual updates.

Our sister organisation Symbol Family Support Services is rated as Outstanding by Ofsted and together we have robust processes in place for safeguarding.
