Thames Valley Adventure Playground (TVAP)

Based on a 2.5 acre secure site adjacent to the A4 in Taplow, near Maidenhead, the Playground is open to children and adults with all types of special need, however, mild or profound, their siblings and parents/carers.  It offers a range of adventurous, therapeutic and educational play activities in a safe, caring and stimulating environment for both children and adults.

Indoor facilities include:

  • large interactive Soft Play area with ball pool and intelligent lighting
  • Multi-sensory and music rooms 
  • the main playroom has arts and crafts, a games room,
  • quiet area and lots of toys and games.

Outside activities include:

  • wheelchair roundabout and swings
  • sand pit and splash pool,
  • gardening areas
  • the Castle - a climbing structure with a huge slide,fireman’s pole and rope bridges
  • picnic areas
  • elevated walkways to view the lake
  • surfaced games areas with adapted bikes and electric cars
  • crazy golf
  • camp building and challenge area
  • large sensory garden
  • treetop walkway and bug area

The Playground also holds regular clubs and events including:

  • Sessions for young adults with special needs over the age of 16 run every Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Saturday adult sessions for 17-25 year olds are also available on the first Saturday of the month 12.00-3.30pm.
  • Fun Club for teens and young adults  with special needs to come along, socialise and enjoy themselves in a relaxed and safe environment. Every Thursday evening from 7 to 9.30 p.m
  • Integrated Playdays open to children 12 and under with no special needs. Every Saturday throughout the year, between 10 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.
  • Taplow Toddlers, an integrated fun group for toddlers aged 5 and under with or without a special need. Wednesday mornings from 9.30-11.00
  • After school club for under 16s, Wednesdays, term time 4-6pm

Families can go to the playground during the school holidays from 10.00-3.30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.  The cost is £8 per child including siblings (carers are free). Please note that places get booked quickly during the holiday periods so please book early.

and booking is essential at all times.

Is your service accessible?
The majority of the site and equipment is accessible. The buildings and indoor play spaces, changing facilities and toilets are all accessible (limited hoist access in soft play area).

Staff are able to use Makaton and PECS (Picture Exchange Communication system).

All staff are trained in care and play with children with special needs.
What are the eligibility criteria for your service?
We are open to all families and individuals with special needs. Children’s days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. We welcome all children with special needs up to age 16. On Fridays we welcome young people and adults over 16. Assessments are carried out for short breaks.
How are referrals/applications made to your service?

What is your service standard for responding to referrals/accessing services?
Apart from Short breaks, bookings are taken on a first come first served basis. Saturdays and periods such as school holidays are very busy so please get in early!

We do not charge as such but very much welcome a contribution towards the cost of your visit. We would not stop any eligible person from using the playground purely on financial grounds, If you have any concerns regarding the user contribution please ask to speak in confidence the centre manager.

The most recent Ofsted inspection (non-domestic full day care) was 14.08.14.
Feedback and complaints procedure
We have both an informal and formal process for feedback and we welcome any comments. In our last user evaluation we returned a 98% ‘fully satisfied’ rating.

Complaints can be made in person to any member of staff or more formally using our published procedure on our website.
How will I know my child/ young person will be safe using this service?
The short break assessment process gathers care and personal information which the playstaff use to inform the child’s care and enjoyment of our activities. Each child has an ongoing care file which is completed during each visit.

We operate a rigorous safer recruitment policy for all staff and volunteers.

Robust safeguarding policies and procedures in place which include photo use, mobile phones, medication and personal care.
