Hawks Youth Group (Camp Mohawk)

'Hawks' is a youth project for teenagers and young adults aged 15-25 (starting age 15-19) and is part of Camp Mohawk's Short Breaks Programme which is aimed at children and young people with HFA (High Functioning Autism) and AS (Aspergers Syndrome).

Hawks meets on Thursday evenings during term time and uses Camp Mohawk as its primary venue, as well as offering regular activities in Maidenhead, Reading and Wokingham. The group participates in a variety of activities including, archery, cookery, games nights, film nights, laser quest, bowling, trips to the cinema, meals out, go-karting, shopping and discos at Camp Mohawk, amongst others.

The friendly and supportive staff are there to encourage members to have fun, make friends, and the experiences offered are aimed at boosting confidence and self esteem.

Is your service accessible?
At Camp Mohawk the site is accessible for wheelchair users, we have a wheelchair accessible bathroom and shower facilities. We continually strive to have a centre that gives access to all users with varying special needs.
What are the eligibility criteria for your service?
Hawks is eligible for young people aged 15-25. Hawks is aimed at young people that have High Functioning Autism (HFA) or Aspergers, but we also accept young people with HFA in combination with other conditions such as ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder, Dyspraxia and Conduct Disorder.
How are referrals/applications made to your service?
Referral is not mandatory, however we do expect that parents, guardians or carers as well as the young person visit Camp Mohawk before applying for Hawks mainly to ensure that the program is right for them.

What is your service standard for responding to referrals/accessing services?
We strive to get back to parents/practitioners as soon as possible in regards to referrals. We do encourage a face to face meeting with the young person (with parents/guardians/carers) and if all parties are happy they will have a place on the Short Breaks/Hawks mailing list and will be updated with events that are happening throughout the year

The charge for the Hawks Program is currently £50 per term, however no young person will be excluded on the basis of cost.

How will I know my child/ young person will be safe using this service?
ll staff and volunteers are employed subject to full (enhanced) DBS checks, and satisfactory references. All staff receive annual Safeguarding Training and the Safeguarding Policy of the organisation is updated at least annually, in partnership with external organisations and consultants. Where appropriate we will arrange a meeting or discussion with parents and/or carers prior to children accessing our services to ensure their needs are met.
